Hook Or By Crook, New play by Rajesh Gopie

Hook Or By Crook, New play by Rajesh Gopie

Hook Or By Crook dishes out a theatrical gourmet of contemporary township life and puts the distasteful elements of local politics under the microscope. At its heart, the show examines the lack of moral leadership and serves to remind all of the greatness of our past leaders.

Premiering at Sibaya’s, Izulu Theatre | Dates: June 27th until July 8th

Respected multi Award winning Actor and Director, Rajesh Gopie, hits the ground running in his home
city Durban with a juicy new political satire.

Gopie, is a household name especially known for his international hit play Out of Bounds and The
Coolie Odyssey, as well as starring the national hit film, Keeping up With Kandasamys. His latest work,
Hook Or By Crook, is a razor sharp political satire that will have you laughing, crying and foot stomping
on the edge of your seats.

The genesis of the show lies in Rajesh setting up a performance internship to give skills training to
Durban artists, especially from previously disadvantaged communities. As an established artist, who
himself emerged from a disadvantaged background, he felt a need to impart his skills to others free of
charge. The participants have spent the past three and a half months in daily workshops that consisted
of acting, singing and dancing.

The performance at Izulu Theatre is a culmination of the 4-month internship and gives a professional
platform to these participants. The ultimate objective of this project is to contribute and add skilled
new blood to the KZN performance industry.

The story is set against the backdrop of the informal trader market and municipal flats in Chatsworth.
Here the locals are toiling from a lack of moral leadership among them. The central protagonist,
Manikum Chetty, a former freedom fighter, hungers to restore the values of freedom struggle,
especially that of equality, opportunity and service delivery for all. However, nowadays he lives a life of
despair as he laments how, “the revolutions dream is bleeding down the stream”. In addition, his
personal flaws have reduced him to being a shadow of his former prominence.

Manikum finally has an opportunity to resurrect his credentials when he comes face to face with
powerful political leaders, who in a corrupt scheme are intent on destroying the homes of people living
in his area. Does he still have the “good-fight” left in his aging body? Does he still possess moral
leadership, or will he succumb to intimidation, corruption and bribery, like so many others? It all
unravels in this meaty and delicious homegrown show where the plot reveals a host of lovable, familiar
and sometimes unsavory characters.
