From the Horse’s Mouth – Time to Shine Gateway Fashion Preview Concert

“Years of planning, months of preparation, weeks of sharpening, days of fine tuning, hours of tension, minutes of anguish, seconds of panic;” the Vodacom Durban July 2018 theme has been identified as “It Is Time,” with every element of the race day having the aspect of time attached to it. Similarly, from conception to construction, time is also a concept that is integral to the art of fashion design; be it making patterns, cutting fabric, constructing garments and fitting the final pieces; and the Gateway Fashion Preview and Concert was an exciting expression of Durban’s eclectic fashion footprint.

Timeless, understated and classic are definitive descriptors when it comes to  Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event, established in 1897, and Saturday the 30th of June presented Durban’s most stylish pre-race day fashion event at Gateway Theatre of Shopping’s WavePark.  A celebration of diverse Designers, as well as the young and dynamic talent that Durban has to offer, the ultimate pre-race day fashion event, celebrating its’ tenth anniversary, welcomed Durban’s fashion forward crowd as well as key sponsors Vodacom Red and Vodacom Nxt Lvl and associated sponsors Kryolan and Gerald Wells Hair Salon.

Hosted by ex Miss South Africa and Radio Host Liesl Laurie, who was a vision in a signature silhouette by Kathrin Kidger and East Coast Radio’s JSbu looking dapper in Fabiani, the stage was set for an unforgettable evening of fashion and fun on a cool Winter’s evening at Gateway’s WavePark.

A platform for stalwarts in South African Design, as well as fresh, young talent, the Gateway Fashion Preview, opened with the official Durban July Timeless Collection featuring pieces by Brenda Quin, Hanrie Lues, Katekani Moreku, Leona Magdelene Pillay, Madelain Clark, Martin Steenkamp, Racine Lyle Meredith Denny, Sadie Bosworth Smith, Sibusiswe Msimang and Skye Pengelly.

Guests were treated to an invited Designer Showcase with capsule pieces from Paledi Segapo, JJ Schoeman, Zama Mathe, Vino Moodley, Sandile Duke Mngadi, Kathrin Kidger, Casey Jeanne and Leigh Schubert. Reflecting on the versatility of the theme for the Vodacom Durban July 2018 “It is Time,” Vino Moodley was up before the sun to contemplate her creative, and taking a number of photographs, she used a rich colour palette to depict the time that comes with a new day that each sunrise brings; whilst Kathrin Kidger paid homage to the old-world concepts of executing garments with a neutral palette, glamorous silhouettes and a freshness in fabrication and the treatment thereof. Casey Jeanne’s Collection had a strong Egyptian influence, and inspired by fabrics, textures, new ideas and defying tradition, her designs embodied an appreciation for the female form, with a colour palette of muted toffees and milks with golden accents.

The Vodacom Durban July’s Young Designers competition winners had the opportunity to showcase their Collections, with an impressive opening by a local dance troupe. Durban displayed their contemporary creativity, and the immense talent that the city has to offer is undeniable, as these Collections made their way onto the runway.

With Gateway Theatre of Shopping as the ultimate destination from which to draw style inspiration and looks for race day coming up on Saturday the 7th of July; a host of retailers were showcased at the Preview, including Woolworths, Forever New, Fabiani and C Squared, offering some serious inspiration for men and women when it comes to their race day ensembles.

With Durban’s famous flavours permeating the floating dinner, the VIP Lounge was an fashionable feathering of Designers and young Fashion contemporaries, mingling amidst an ode to iconic landmarks such as the fashionable Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Spotting the likes of local Fashion Bloggers Jane Wonder to The AW Lifestyle, Prince Edgie to Blog Box’s Riaa Algoo, there were also a host of young and fashionable local Personalities including Miss South Africa 2018 Finalist Karishma Ramdev, Celebrity Makeup Artist Neil Ramutar, Beauty Thought Leaders Amanda Jingela, Pam Sole, Andiswe Mbhele, as well as DJ Le Soul. Media Personality Taryn Louch and Blogger Sarah Langa were in town for the weekend and dressed by Kathrin Kidger and Aldo Shoes, and also enjoying the fashion fanfare were Selimathunzi’s Khanya Mkangisa and Morning Show on eTV’s Tino Chinyani, wearing Aldo Shoes. The pièce de résistance was a chic black carousel featuring a fashion installation of models right off the runway, making for some seriously instagrammable snapshots.

Lipton Tea provided a perfect escape from all the action, with a selection of their signature sustainable blends paired with the perfect macarons in their Tea Garden, such as lilac blueberry macarons complimenting a cup of chamomile tea.

The show was followed by an explosive after-party hosted at the WavePark featuring local Performing Artists. Guests partied until midnight to the sounds of electro hop Music Duo, Locnville, award-winning Hip-hop Artist Kwesta, and Rapper Okmalumkoolkat, hailing from Umlazi. Spinning the decks were local favourites, Music Mixer DJ Funky B, Producer and DJ Carly O as well as high energy homegrown entertainment from East Coast Radio’s Deon G.
