An obituary for David Pithey

An obituary for David Pithey

Former South African and Rhodesian cricketer David Pithey died yesterday (Sunday) aged 81. He was only the second South African spinner to take six or more wickets in a Test, a feat which wasn’t to be repeated for another 33 years.

As a student at Oxford University, David gained a rare double Oxford blue for cricket and hockey.

An off-spin bowler and useful batsman, David made his first-class debut for Rhodesia in 1956. He played eight Tests for South Africa, from 1963 to 1967; and played for Western Province, Oxford University and Northamptonshire.

His brother Tony also played Test cricket for South Africa, with the brothers playing together in five Tests during the 1963-64 tour to Australasia.

In a test match in New Zealand during that tour, David took six for 58 in the second innings of the 2nd Test at Dunedin, becoming only the second South African spinner (after Hugh Tayfield) to take six or more wickets in a Test.  The feat wasn’t to be repeated until 1996 when Paul Adams took 6 for 55.

David was head of marketing at Kearsney College until 1995.

He had been battling Alzheimer’s for several years; and leaves his wife, Sarie, and two daughters, Michelle and Janet.  His son Jeremy passed away two years ago.
