Our list of the nicest November must-haves!

Honestly yum

With the warmer weather encouraging some outdoor exercise and a healthier frame of mind, we’ve become addicted to cold-pressed juices, so how thrilled were we when we discovered that South Africa’s premium fruit juice, Sir, took its fresh, zesty offering to the next level with a cold pressed range bursting with flavour, nutrients and goodness. They’re all delish and sell for around R21.95 per 300ml at  top retail stores.

Summer days + total protection = safe fun in the sun

We’re mad about our new discovery… SVR Sun Secure, a French sun protection range that offers extra protection. We all know we need protection when out in the sun, but we didn’t know UVA / UVB protection only blocks 10 per cent of the sun’s rays. The other 90 per cent – visible light and infrared – penetrate even deeper into the skin, causing real damage. And that’s what Sun Secure offers. Suitable for the whole family, the range is water, sweat and rub resistant, lasts up to eight hours, has a delicate summery fragrance and the products are quickly absorbed by the skin,. There are five products: a Sun Secure Blur (the perfect combo of high SPF50 sun protection and a mousse cream R250), Sun Secure Fluide (an invisible dry touch face milk with SPF+, R235), Sun Secure Brume (an ultra-fine mist, has a SPF50+ and is great for adults and kids, R435), Sun Secure Lait (also SPF50+, hydrating milk, R360) and  Sun Secure Aprés-soliel (this after sun product rehydrates the skin and soothes, R250). You’ll find this range at Clicks as well as select doctors and beauty salons. Details:

So we love our skin. We love summer. And we love our readers… which is why we’re giving away a full set of this amazing sun care to one lucky reader. Simply  find the competition on our home page, fill in the entry form and  hold thumbs.

Look good, do good, feel good

This season’s hot hit is the Uzwelo beach bag range: wide-strapped bags that are roomy enough to fit in everything a beach babe cannot live without. By buying one, you’ll also improve people’s lives and help the environment because Uzwelo, an Expand a Sign initiative, has teamed up with nimble-fingered seamstresses from some of KZN’s poorest communities to produce these bags handcrafted from left-over banner fabric otherwise destined for landfills. For just R220 for the standard size and R310 for the large bag. No need to trawl the mall because you can buy online at or call 0860 744 688.

Mmmm… summer salad

This is just so, so refreshing! For those of you who love entertaining or simply just indulging in exotic flavours, we have no doubt that you will love this Summer Pork and Watermelon Salad concocted by the one and only Jamie Oliver. You can roast the pork the day before you want to  serve it if you like. It’s also great with sticky rice. For us, the salad idea is a winner for summer in Durbs… the refreshing watermelon, crunchy greens and chilli hum from the dressing make this a knockout dish. Check out the recipe at

1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, finely grated

2 tsp black peppercorns

1 tsp allspice

1kg higher welfare pork belly

Olive oil

3 tbsp. honey

1 tbsp. soy sauce

2 tbsp. sesame seeds

1 small watermelon, cut into chunks, thumb-sized pieces

½ bunch of coriander, leaves picked

½ bunch of spring onions, sliced

25g pickled ginger, for ginger dressing

1 lime, for ginger dressing

1 tbsp. fish sauce, for ginger dressing

1 tbsp. reduced salt soy sauce, for ginger dressing

1 red chilli, finely chopped, for ginger dressing

Preheat the oven to 160°C. Rub the ginger, peppercorns, allspice and a pinch of salt into the pork. Place the meat in a roasting tray along with a splash of water, cover with tin foil and roast for 2½ – 3 hours, or until cooked and easy to pull apart. Let the pork cool, then cut into chunks. Heat a little olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat, add the pork and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until golden on each side. In the last 30 seconds, drizzle with the honey, soy sauce and sesame seeds. For the dressing, shake all the ingredients together in a clean jam jar. Toss the pork with the watermelon and the dressing on a platter. Serve scattered with coriander leaves and spring onion.

Buon appetito!

With nothing but a suitcase full of dreams and her faithful friend ‘the cello’, Cecilia Di Cecco left Italy to work as a musician with the KZNPO in Durban. Here she learnt to cultivate her music and at the same time began a love affair with food that eventually led to the recent launch of her first cookbook, Cucina in South Africa.
