Sandile is going for green
“Aubrey has been putting in some serious training and we are confident he will be in the Silvers this year,” says Mike Nunan, general manager at Tala Collection (which is situated a short distance away from the Comrades Route, midway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg).
The 43-year-old father of six, who started running seriously at the age of 28, is eyeing the coveted Green Number in this year’s Comrades Marathon.
With a best-marathon time of 2:22 for a standard 42,2km-marathon, Sandile has notched up some serious successes along the way. His Comrades’ medal count is impressive. He has run and completed nine Comrades – and been awarded two Wally Hayward Medals (11th to under 6 hours) and seven silver medals (finishing under 7:30). Legendary KZN and South African marathon runner – Willie Mtolo – is his source of inspiration.
He runs every day, if possible – “Mostly in the early mornings!” and logs a minimum of 100 kilometres a week and 180 kilometres a week at his peak in training.
With a Comrades-best time of 5 hours and 54 minutes, Sandile has his training wrapped up. Even though he prefers the down-run he is still hoping for an excellent day on the road.
“If all goes according to plan, I am hoping to get another silver medal – and of course, my Green Number!” Sandile says.
