The highly anticipated Old Mutual Music at the Lak

The highly anticipated Old Mutual Music at the Lake series is back with a special concert in celebration of Mother's Day on Sunday, May 12 at the stunning Durban Botanic Gardens.

Music enthusiasts and families alike can look forward to an unforgettable live performance by the legendary Mango Groove, known for their unique sound that blends pop, rock, and traditional South African music. In addition to this, one of our faves, comedian Aaron McIlroy will entertain concert-goers, making this concert an unmissable experience for all ages.

You can bring your own food and drinks (cooler boxes charged at R50 at the gate), blankets and camping chairs to enjoy a delightful picnic-style afternoon on the shaded lawns amidst the resident birdlife.

Gates open at 1pm, music starts at 2pm and the show ends at 5pm. Tickets are priced from R10 to R250.

Driven by a sole mission - to tackle the challenges of food insecurity and unemployment - one family-run enterprise is helping put food on the table, one sock at a time.

Meet Mike Nel, a Shongweni family man whose vision, along with that of the rest of his family, is a nourished South Africa. After more than two decades in HR, he packed up his desk and left the corporate world to fulfil his purpose as a social entrepreneur.
With a serious drive to make a difference to the lives of those around him, Mike now heads up the KZN factory for Food Sock, a revolutionary meal-in-a-bag business that is making waves around the food industry.

Nutritious, tasty (trust us on this one), convenient and affordable, these meals can feed up to four adults or six children, for just R45, in under 40 minutes - yes, you read that right – which makes them ideal for busy moms, single folk, students, pensioners, campers, hikers and, especially these days, during load shedding.

Food Sock was originally founded in 2021 by George resident Carl van Blerk, and relative of Mike, who, as a passionate Lions Club member was asked by the government to support the efforts of providing food to the local community during Covid.

Fast forward and Mike and his wife, Meghan, now run a very busy factory in Waterfall where, together with an amazing team, they make up a variety of different food socks. They are sold for home consumption and in bulk as they are ideal for feeding schemes and other outreach programmes helping disadvantaged communities, which is something close to the hearts of both Carl and Mike.

There are just two weeks left before our Mother’s Day Breakfast and tickets are almost sold out!

Held in partnership with @halfwayfordwf, @kingsmeadshoes and @willowwaymanor, our event takes place at Willow Way Manor on Friday, May 10 from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

A delicious breakfast will be served, you can browse our on-site market, find inspiration through our keynote speaker @burgette.yarlett, enjoy trend-setting fashion by @calypsocollections.shop, groove to live entertainment by @kithandkin_music, and a hopefully get your hands on one of a host of incredible raffle and spot prizes.

As we edge closer to Mother’s Day, whether we are mums or not, most of us reflect on how we have been affected by the role of motherhood through our own mums - by the pain of their loss or the impact of their presence. This is Hanrie Lues’ story.
When I think back to my mom when I was a child, I have very few memories of her smiling. My dad and I were inseparable, but I grew up always feeling disconnected from my mom, often thinking it was my fault; that I had done something to make her reject me. It took me a very long time to understand that she suffered from chronic depression and that I wasn’t to blame. Even so, as an only child especially, it affected me every day,” says Hanrie, a popular and well-liked figure in the bridal world and a mixed media artist in her spare time.
